Cambridge Flight

Last month saw the launch of a new web site by The Hug for Cambridge Flight Ltd.

Cambridge Flight operates a Cirrus SR-22, N741CD, from Cambridge Airport. This is a fast & modern four-seat single engine aircraft incorporating a whole body parachute for safety purposes which we think is quite extraordinary - do take a look at the photographs of it being deployed. It is available for personal or business hire to qualified pilots on a self-piloted basis.

We designed a simple to navigate web site for them which includes lots of information about the plane and a form to allow provisional bookings to be made.

Commenting on the site Andrew Cummins, managing director of Cambridge Flight said "We are very pleased with the elegant, classic styling and clean design that The Hug has used to create our new web site.".

The web site can be found at http://www.cambridgeflight.com

UK Solutions

If you have an Opus based web site from The Hug it's probably hosted at UK Solutions. They upgraded their MySQL database server on a Friday last month.

In order to ensure there were no problems for our customers as a result of this upgrade we brought forward the weekly complete backup of all sites on support and did it late on Thursday night.

In fact it all went very smoothly and downtime was kept to a minimum by UK Solutions, re-enforcing our belief that they continue to be the best option for shared server hosting.

Getting Your News Out via RSS

An increasing number of news sites from the BBC downwards are syndicating their news via a technology called RSS (Really Simple Syndication). Syndicating your news via RSS lets readers keep an eye on your web site's news without having to visit it on the off chance that you've posted something. Through a news "aggregator" they can check all the sites they are watching through CSS for new news. Effectively it lets readers create their own electronic newspaper based on RSS feeds from many sites. You can find a longer explanation of RSS here on our web site.

Some web browsers allow you to browse RSS feeds directly, Firefox for example uses a technology they call "Live Bookmarks" to do this. If you're using a less capable browser such as Internet Explorer then there are a wide range of RSS aggregators available for download. There are also web sites which let you read RSS feeds. Our current favourite is Bloglines.

RSS is proving increasingly popular with more switched on Web users so you may want to think about providing an RSS feed on your site. If you're using our Opus content management system for your web site then the next public release supports RSS. We've already enabled it on some of our own web sites including the Milton Village site (look for the orange "XML" link a fair way down on the left hand side of the page) where it has proved popular.

If you would like to syndicate your web site news via RSS too then talk to us.

New Additions to The Hug

Jemima and Rebeccah The latest additions to The Hug are two Khaki Campbell ducks. Called Jemima and Rebeccah (after Jemima Puddleduck and her sister-in-law) they joined us between Christmas and New Year.

They are always on the go looking for bugs; splashing in their bath and investigating their surroundings. Unusually for a domestic duck they can also fly, as we have discovered when Rebeccah escaped, so they each now have one clipped one wing.

Khaki Campbells are were introduced in Great Britain by Mrs Campbell of Uley at the turn of this century. The origins are from the wild mallard; the fawn and white Runner and the Rouen ducks. She was trying to produce a good layer and the best birds have been recorded to lay nearly 340 eggs a year and our two are now producing one delicious white egg each a day.
