Milton Village

The Milton Village web site is a community site managed by a loose group of villagers working under the banner of "Milton Online". The site brings together a number of strands.
|
- it provides a home for Milton News. For over a decade Milton had a mailing list milton-news which is hosted on our list server. Now it also has a web site.
This means that village news can now published in four different ways by doing one thing. The editor writes an article for the web site. If it's something for the future, like a reminder of an event which needs to be published closer to the event, they can "embargo" the article.
When the article is published:
- it appears on the web site, the latest news appears on the front page but older news can be found by scrolling back or searching the archive.
- it appears in the web site's RSS feed, so people who subscribe to the feed receive the news that way.
- a Twitter "tweet" is posted to the Twitter user MiltonNews giving a brief summary of the news and a web link to the article on the web site.
- the article appears in the next milton-news mailing so people subscribed to the milton-news list get the news within the next day or two (milton-news is normally published on Monday and Friday mornings).
- it provides a home for the village diary.
Some news articles are also published in a fifth way. While entering the article the editor can give a date, a time it starts and/or ends and a location and it is then automatically published in a Google Calendar which makes up one half of the village diary.
Events shown in there in blue come directly from posting articles to the Milton News web site. (Events in green come from a second Google Calendar which is updated directly from Google.)
